Mount Holly, known as "The Little City with the Big Heart", is a vibrant community within the Metro area of Charlotte, Gastonia and Rock Hill. Bordered to the east by the Catawba River and Mountain Island Lake, and to the south by the major roadway of I-85, Mount Holly offers visitors the charm of a small southern town. Because of Mount Holly's geographical location, residents there have access to a number of public and private colleges and universities, including Belmont Abbey College, Gaston College, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and Johnson C. Smith University.
The Gaston-Lincoln Regional Public Library System, which serves Gaston County and Lincoln County, has a branch in Mount Holly.
